Ringers LED Triptych by Dmitri Cherniak
N
In 2021, artist and engineer Dmitri Cherniak released Ringers: a series of 1,000 square visual outputs, each one generated by a single algorithm. The idea was simple: a string wrapped around a set of pegs, but the results were astonishing. The collection sold out in 20 minutes and went on to enter the permanent collections of major museums around the world.1
What you are looking at now is not one of those 1,000 outputs. It is the algorithm itself, in motion.1
This installation cycles through the full visual universe that Ringers can produce: changing the size of the pegs, the density of the grid, the way the string wraps. Each shift in what you see corresponds to a change in the underlying code. There are billions of possible configurations.1
Watch long enough, and you will begin to understand how generative art works: not by reading about it, but by seeing the rules change in front of you.
